The BA (Hons) Performing Arts course is a highly practical and heavily taught programme with much delivery taking place within specialist studios and theatre spaces based in the City of Leeds. The primary focus of the course is to train students on how to become Interdisciplinary Makers and Performers in the performing arts sector, developing upon students existing theatre, voice, and movement skills. Learning will take place through three strands, the first is how to make-work, the second is performer training and the third is conceptual/critical knowledge development. To do this, students will take modules that encompass contemporary theatre practices, movement and choreography, ensemble performance, devising, and engage with theoretical contexts in lecture/seminar-based sessions. Alongside lectures, seminars, and project-based work students will also undertake weekly technique classes in movement and voice training, which will further explore the role of 'Embodied Knowledges' in multidisciplinary performance practices.
The underlying ethos of the course is that students will explore how different disciplines come together to create innovative works that challenge how we understand performance practice in the 21st century. As such, we are interested in how individual artists can use multiple disciplines to make work, how artistic disciplines can come together, and how disciplines from outside the sector can work alongside performing arts practices to offer us new perspectives. The BA (Hons) Performing Arts course will be firmly rooted within the cultural landscape of the City of Leeds and will be impacted by our professional partnerships. Alongside these stakeholders, students will learn through project-based teaching and learning and can expect to regularly engage with Live Briefs.
At Level 4, students can expect to engage with a range of different performance disciplines developing their skills and understanding of the underlying principles of these disciplines and the contexts that surround their development. However, as they progress to Level 5 and 6, the student's pathway on the degree will begin to reflect their own career aspirations and professional development needs as project-based modules require more independence, with negotiated assessments that allow students room to explore their own artistic interests. This will lead to the final assessment of the course where third year work will be showcased in our annual 'Lift Off' festival.
1. To critically explore the potential for interdisciplinary practice to offer new perspectives on performance making, production and analysis.
2. To recognise the multitude of performance disciplines, styles, and cultural influences that inform and shape 21st Century performing arts practices.
3. To develop in students a set of personal, intellectual, creative, imaginative, and practical skills appropriate to the field of Interdisciplinary Performance Practice. 4. To develop vocal, physical and intellectual skills, enabling students to become innovative and reflexive creative practitioners. 5. To contribute to the development and promotion of the eminently employable multi-skilled independent artist practitioner to motivate graduates to become capable contributors and collaborators to the Creative Industries.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

1.Utilise multiple practices within the performing arts, such as movement, vocal skills, and theatre craft, as well skills beyond this discipline, to create new perspectives in performance.
2.Critique performance practices with an awareness of historical, social, cultural, and global contexts, applying this understanding to the creation of their own innovative performance practice. 3.Employ creative vocabularies, skills, techniques in performance through an advanced understanding of 'Embodied Knowledges' in movement and voice, and their application in and through practice. 4.Demonstrate the ability to construct and communicate complex arguments about performance, practice and practitioners, through the application of advanced scholarly skills and techniques. 5.Demonstrate creative communication, collaboration and leadership skills in the pursuit and management of independent practice and study. 6.Employ reflexive and critical praxis in the analysis of their own creative processes and products, demonstrating creative problem solving in the pursuit of entrepreneurial arts practice, postgraduate study and/or employment.

Level 6 Learning Outcomes:

6Employ reflexive and critical praxis in the analysis of your own professional practice and developmental needs demonstrating creative problem solving in the pursuit of employment.

It is important for your progression and achievement that you submit all work for all assignments in a timely manner. It is also important that you keep copies of all work submitted until after you have graduated. You should also keep any receipts confirming the submission of assignments. In the event of your submitted work being lost you may be required to produce a copy of the work and submission receipt. If you are unable to do so, your work will not be marked.

It is important to note that submitting all assignments is a requirement of your course. Should you experience extenuating circumstances which prevent you from submitting on time please make yourself aware of the Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances process. Without any form of extenuating circumstances, standard penalties apply for late submission of assessed work. Assessed work will normally be returned with appropriate feedback within four weeks of your submission. Each Module Handbook will provide you with specific guidelines on how and when you will receive feedback on your assessments. Summative feedback will usually be offered in written format via Turnitin on the University MyBeckett site. However, there are occasions when verbal feedback will be offered, specifically when dialogue around creative products in essential. Formative feedback is offered in many forms, this may be annotated notes on documents, verbal guidance in workshop sessions, or through conversations in modular tutorials.

Results from module assessments and decisions on progression to the next level of study (e.g., from Level 4 to Level 5 of an undergraduate degree) or awards (if you are in the final level) are available on the Results Online system: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/student-information/exams-assessments-and-awards/results-online/.

Results will appear in Results Online within five working days of the date of the Progression and Award Board meeting (the meeting where your end of level outcome will be decided) or the Module Board meeting (the meeting where modular outcomes are decided).

Students who enrol on BA (Hons) Performing Arts can expect a variety of engaging learning experiences. Traditional lecture and seminar-based sessions provide an opportunity for students to discuss trends in performance and wider cultural practices in a critically informed manner with staff and external speakers. Workshops and making processes are also engaged with as a way of informing and developing the individual practical needs of each learner. Similarly, through participation in weekly technique classes students will develop their 'embodied' understanding of arts practice, working towards professional standards. The ethos of the course is one that values Professional Practice, and as such, students should expect teaching and learning activities to occur with professional artists, curators, and pedagogues in professionally appropriate settings. The 'making' of art is an important part of BA (Hons) Performing Arts, and this occurs in a variety of contexts. Students will be expected to make solo art, but also work as an ensemble, be directed by in house and external artists, and receive, and reflect upon, critical feedback. The understanding of one's processes is also demonstrated in a variety of contexts, in the first instance this occurs in the making and presentation of performance, but also through portfolios, presentations, lecture demonstrations, vivas, and essays. In some cases, assessment vehicles are negotiated, in the form of a learning agreement, and adapted to suit the individual academic needs of the learner, whilst still adhering to the rigour of the learning outcomes.
The BA (Hons) Performing Arts course seeks to provide: ●Students with the opportunity to learn and develop 'embodied knowledges' in weekly technique classes that run in addition to and also inform, the modules associated with BA (Hons) Performing Arts.
●An active learning environment for students based on the values of an academic collaborative community.
●In the spirit of diversity and widening participation, a learning climate that supports and credits different learning styles and students through 'non-traditional' routes.
●More traditional approaches to learning and teaching such as lectures and seminar are underpinned by practice-based modules, which encourage teaching and learning that values practice as a form of research alongside other qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. ●The opportunity for students to identify, explore and develop their practice in a multicultural, artistic perspective drawing upon contemporary critiques of global cultures.
●A creative learning environment where creative practice is fundamental to the student experience on the programme. ●Dynamic practices and imaginative critical enquiry so that students are inspired to grapple with new ideas and think critically within their chosen field. ●An environment that nurtures a dynamically fluid and inclusive ethos, inspiring creative and productive responses to diversity and difference. It purposefully maximises individuality as a means of advancing critically, creative artists.

Level 4 Modules

The University expects you to attend and contribute fully to all mandatory sessions on your timetable as set out in your student contract. Engagement in your lectures, seminars and practicals is an important part of your learning - contributing both to the University community and the learning experience of your fellow students on the course. This includes engagement in scheduled virtual learning and activities and meetings in online environments related to your studies.

We monitor your engagement at the University as regular attendance and academic achievement are closely linked. Moreover, by monitoring your engagement and attendance we can identify students who may need our guidance or support at an early stage to help them progress in their studies. This is part of our commitment to ensuring an excellent education and experience and supporting your success at Leeds Beckett.

The University does understand that from time to time there is good reason why you cannot attend a class, and in this instance you must contact your School office to let them know. This may then be recorded as an 'authorised absence'.

Please note that any attendance reports can be shared with you and your Course team. You might be asked to contact your School office so that appropriate academic or pastoral support can be offered, should your attendance record give cause for concern.

Our most important aim is to support your studies, but we are also required to report attendance to various external bodies such as the Student Loan Company and the Home Office. There are measures in place for students who seek to falsely register either their own or fellow students' attendance.

You must notify your Course Administrator if you are absent (for example for an interview, emergency unforeseen circumstances, or for compassionate leave). If you are going to apply for mitigation you will need to provide written evidence of the reason for your absence.

If you are unable to study because of another illness for more than 14 consecutive days (including weekends), you must provide us with a Fit Note.

You can send a digital copy of your Fit Note to your Course Administrator, and then send the original by post.

If you are absent through illness on the day of an examination or assignment deadline and you intend to apply for mitigation, you must also provide us with details as possible. Your submission for mitigation may be made online and the circumstances surrounding it may be self-certified unless your period of absence is prolonged. Generally, all absences of 2 weeks or more will require the submission of verifiable documentary evidence.

Any Leeds Beckett student who suspects they may have, or have been diagnosed as having a serious infectious disease such as coronavirus, Mumps, TB, measles, meningitis or chicken pox should not attend campus. For notifiable diseases, students should notify their Course Director or Course Administrator as soon as possible giving information regarding which groups of students (and/or colleagues and clients on placements) you have been in contact with and when. For some diseases, such as TB and meningitis, your doctor and our Student Wellbeing Team have a responsibility to notify the West Yorkshire Public Health Protection Team who may also wish to speak to you (or your family) to determine if others require screening or medication. One of the aims of this course is to enable students to develop qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment such as communication skills, teamwork skills and professional attributes such as being highly motivated and competitive but also collaborative and inclusive. You will have the opportunity to develop such skills and attributes via a number of work-related opportunities at each level of your course.

Level 5: Students can undertake a minimum of 40 hours placement on the ELECTIVE module 'Introduction to Arts Infrastructure'

Students are responsible for obtaining their own placement, with assistance from the University. The locations will vary, dependant on the opportunity.

You will need to provide your own transport and additional costs that are occurred during your placement module.

Students are expected to develop individual skills and group attributes that are valuable for personal and professional development. These include team working; research and presentation skills; critical thinking; evaluation and reporting; independent learning; facilitation; creative thinking and problem solving; written, verbal and visual communication.

You will have opportunities to gain recognition during your time at Leeds Beckett University for the extra activities you do in addition to your studies, including volunteering, student societies, playing in our University sports teams and being a Course Representative.

By joining a society with Leeds Beckett Students' Union, you can make new friends, have fun, try something new and enhance your CV - societies provide a great opportunity to learn new skills and improve your existing ones. It can be difficult to get to know new people at university but don't worry, everyone is in the same boat! The BA (Hons) Performing Arts course has embedded the three Leeds Beckett graduate attributes of enterprise, global outlook and digital literacy as identified by the course development principles guidance documents located on the Leeds Beckett Centre for Learning and Teaching web page.

Global Outlook
Throughout the BA (Hons) Performing Arts course students will engage with performance practices within their social, historical, cultural, political and global contexts. In so doing students are encouraged to consider the art form and their own emerging practice within a contemporary global landscape. Students develop their practice in a multicultural, artistic perspective drawing on contemporary critiques of global cultures. Non-Euro-centric approaches ask students to apply diverse criticality to their developing practice. Assessment criteria require students to demonstrate an awareness of socio-political ideologies and philosophies within their work.
Digital Literacy
Students will engage with their learning, and the presentation of it, through a range of digital media. Within several practice-based modules, students are encouraged to document and reflect upon work through online Blog and Vlog platforms. Throughout the degree students will access learning resources and discussion forums through the University VLE, as well as other online social spaces.
Enterprise
The study of creative practice will develop progressively over the three years of the BA (Hons) Performing Arts course engaging students implicitly with entrepreneurial skills. The developmental study of skills acquisition, making processes, placement opportunities, and the realisation of performance work to a professional level at level 6 study, means that students will graduate with enterprise competency. This will have been exercised through critically reflective and dynamically creative performance practice. This attainment is assessed continuously through practical modules through levels 4, 5 and 6 and embedded into students' critical thinking. In all project-based modules students engage in planning for research, live projects, networking, performance making, rehearsal, collaboration, performance, marketing and the management of all of the above. Students also employ social networking and blogging to develop public audiences and support for their work.

Work related activity is embedded across all levels of the BA (Hons) Performing Arts course. This is achieved through practitioner-led projects and opportunities for student work-related learning and at Level 5 and 6, specific, work-based learning. The notion of professional practice is introduced from the outset. Students are introduced immediately to the central tenet of professional performance practice (within the professional industry) and during their three years of study, they will be required to embody this professional tenet through making modules and technique classes. On the Performing Arts course project based modules at all levels are designed to accurately model professional contexts and practice within the industry, becoming progressively more student-led and independent as the levels develop. Project-based making modules will be led, directed, mentored or supervised by in house artist/practitioners, ensuring direct contact with industry relevant practice. This ensures that learning and teaching is work related by its alignment with current professional and artistic currency. In this way, the course is designed to facilitate connectivity for students to the industry, developing further partnerships, employment prospects and potential new learning opportunities.
Throughout the course students will have the opportunity to establish local and national/international networks, most specifically during the ELECTIVE module 'Introduction to Arts Infrastructure' at Level 5 and 'Making Work for Festival Contexts' and 'Arts & Social Engagement' modules at Level 6. On the 'Arts Infrastructure' module at Level 5 students will embark on an extended industry placement that accommodates a range of different modes of practice within the professional sector. Students will receive specific support in order to establish relevant placement contacts or develop existing relationships. The exceptional industry links of the course team include, for example, partnerships with Yorkshire Dance, Centre of Live Art Yorkshire, Northern Opera and relationships with Arts Council England, Leeds City Council, Transform Festival, Compass Live Art Festival, Leeds Playhouse, and several independent arts organisations and festivals in order to facilitate access to placement opportunities. In this way, the course is designed to support the connectivity of students to the industry and develop further partnerships, employment prospects and potential new learning opportunities. Specifically, within an Education and Community Context, principles of teaching practice within participatory arts work are explored along with aspects such as social inclusion and cultural diversity within the module 'Arts & Social Engagement' at Level 6. This area is introduced in order to foster the idea that community engagement is an essential element to professional currency, employability and artistic practice.

The purpose of this course is to train artists, and therefore we believe that when students graduate they have the skills and the knowledge to become freelance artistic practitioners. In addition to this, there are a number of other opportunities for our graduates. BA (Hons) Performing Arts will also provide entry onto the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) award or other teacher training routes, for example, Schools Direct. For those who wish to further their education through postgraduate study the course will provide a solid foundation on which graduates may continue to study in theatre and performance related subjects either as an MA or MRes. If graduates are wanting to follow a career as a drama therapist, a degree in BA (Hons) Performing Arts can also be used to access a level 7 conversion course in psychotherapy.

Register with us

Library Academic Support

The Library Academic Support Team can help you develop your academic skills such as critical thinking, academic writing and analysing data, and research skills such as how to find, use and evaluate information for your studies. The team liaises with your lecturers to provide the information resources you need for your subject and to arrange academic skills sessions to support you in your studies.

The team maintains a number of websites and modules to support your learning:

• In your Subject guide, you'll find a variety of information resources which have been selected as a good starting point for research in that area. These are available on the Skills and Subject Support web page or via My Beckett.

OneDrive Leeds Beckett is your individual file storage with 1TB of storage space. With OneDrive you can access and share your files across your devices. University life can have its ups and downs, and occasionally you may find yourself in need of advice. That's where we come in. Here at the SU we have a free advice service that is here just for you, the students at Leeds Beckett University.

The Advice Service at LBSU is a confidential, non-judgmental service run by professional advisers.

The service is independent from the University, so if you are having any problems with your course you can talk confidentially with us - although we do work with the University to find the best solutions, we would only contact them with your permission. PhysicalPerforming Arts has five dedicated spaces in the Leeds School of Art Building. This includes three fit for purpose studio spaces, a Black Box Studio Theatre and 180 Seat Theatre Space. The Course also has specialist equipment for documenting performance, which can be loaned out, however you can also borrow equipment from the University's AV Loans as long as you have a valid Library Card and have no outstanding fines.
Industry ExpertsAll your course tutors are industry experts. In addition, we invite a number of leading performing arts industry professionals to work with you through the course of your studies. You also have the option at L5 study to carry out a Work Based Learning Placement that will position you to work alongside industry professionals in a real-life employment context. This is an elective module titled 'Introduction to Arts Infrastructure'. You also have access to some visiting lectures that are delivered across the School and are encouraged to make use of the relevant industry-related talks and events that take place in regional arts and cultural industries venues.

We are committed to working in partnership with you and the Students' Union to provide you with an inclusive, safe and engaging learning environment which is conducive to study for all our students and our staff. An important element of your time studying with us is your engagement in developing your learning. Your engagement and attendance on your course enables you to further your learning and supports your achievement, course completion and aspirations for the future. There is an expectation that students will attend, engage in their learning and submit on time for assessment. We provide support for you to maximise your time studying with us and to develop your learning, skills and abilities to support you in your chosen career path.

We seek active participation by all our students in the continuous enhancement of our courses and through our monitoring, annual review and enhancement processes. These are formal processes used by our University for assuring the academic standards and quality of your course and its continuous improvement. These processes utilise your feedback, External Examiners' reports, feedback from staff and others, data relating to student outcomes on the course and student surveys to reflect on areas of good practice and areas for further enhancement. Course Representatives (Reps) at undergraduate and postgraduate taught levels are student volunteers who represent you in formal and informal meetings with the University, and follow up on actions that have occurred because of student feedback. You can become a Course Rep, volunteering to represent the views of your peers in order to improve students' academic experience.

In the first few weeks of your time at Leeds Beckett, your Course Director will facilitate an opportunity to appoint Course Reps on your course.

LBSU provides support, training and ongoing development for Course Reps and supports their engagement in enhancement activities throughout the academic year.

Being a Course Rep provides you with an opportunity to enhance your own learning and the development of relevant professional and employability skills alongside your studies. As a Course Rep you would play an important role in:

• Acting as a point of contact and advocate for students on your course and in supporting their active engagement.
• Gathering feedback from students on your course to inform enhancements to the quality of your course and the student experience.
• Facilitating good communication between students and staff on the course.

Leeds Beckett University

PT students will be supported by the course team to determine an appropriate selection of modules from the level for each year of study. PT delivery is usually at half the intensity of the FT equivalent course, although there may be flexibility to increase your pace of study to shorten the overall course duration. Some modules may be delivered in a different sequence to that defined within this information set but the modules offered within each level are consistent. Please note that the work placement option is not generally available to PT students.

Removal of the pass mark at 40% and replace with a pass/fail module (Health & Wellbeing Level 4) where students are assessed on their ability to meet the learning outcomes of the module through a series of 1-2-1 conversations with their tutor.
